The Timeless Indigenous Wisdom of Collective Prayer and Blessing - Offering Comfort, Encouragement, and Confidence

In the times we find ourselves in, desperate for meaning and belonging, the timeless Indigenous wisdom of our ancestors through prayer and blessing can ease us through periods of change. Living in ritual through prayer and blessing is a way of life - integral to living in alignment and presence as active participants in co-creation with life - grieving and honoring what was and simultaneously making way for what is being called in. Community prayers and blessings honor life’s thresholds - moving to a new home, having children, rites of passage - and offer comfort, encouragement, and confidence for making the transition from a known and familiar world into new and uncharted territory.

This offering is a gracious invocation in which we gather as human hearts to plead with the divine heart. It is a beautiful gift that can open doors and bring clarity, peace, strength, healing, and transfiguration. When a blessing or prayer is invoked through ritual, it allows for the influx of the divine flow of the universe to bless us on our path, to accompany us, to guide us, to illuminate us.

Each person has a unique intimacy with Creator and Spirit. Though my Indigenous roots are based in Mexica Aztecatl cosmology and wisdom, I keep my prayers and blessings open in form for all to make meaning and connection in their own unique ways. I begin by calling upon the four directions, our sacred Mother Earth (“Tonantzin Tlalli”), and Creator/Creatress (“Ometeotzin”) and invoking healed ancestors and helping spirit guides of light and the highest order to guide and support us.

Throughout the ceremony, I will share medicine songs with my medicine drum and rattle, cleanse with my Tlemaitl (copal smudging tool), pray with Grandfather Fire (or Grandmother Water if more fitting), and guide participants through prayer, intention-setting, and active participation with our Earth Mother.
